A Courageous Exit from a Place of Death

A Courageous Exit from a Place of Death
May 20, 2020—highlights of the interview with Abby Johnson

When you want to talk with someone who is extremely busy, you typically start with an assistant who handles the scheduling.  Reaching that person can be a huge obstacle race, but I got very lucky with Abby.

Attending a large LIFE event in Washington, D.C., my husband and I were blessed to set up our booth in a prime location.  Our Board of Directors had encouraged us to become a significant $5,000 sponsor of the Pro-Life Summit being hosted by Students for Life, an organization that carries tremendous respect for the quality of work they do to protect and educate on life.

So, we wrote the check, spent another couple of thousand dollars to get a lot of exciting Choose Life Radio booth materials, packed it all in the car and off we went on the drive to D.C.

Now it helped that I had already interviewed Kristen Hawkins, the founder of Students for Life and one of her amazing staff named Tina Whittington, Vice President of that organization. So, when we carried our things to the display room, Tina shared that she had given us a great location for our booth. And she wasn’t kidding!

We were right by the major entrance door to the auditorium—and right across from Abby Johnson’s booth!

As the day progressed, we had a wonderful time talking with people who had unique stories to share.  God gave us opportunities to meet with people who asked for prayer, as well as encourage people who were doing great work in the battle against abortion.

There was rarely time to step away from the booth, but when a quiet moment presented itself, I walked up to Abby Johnson’s booth and told her how impacting her book Unplanned was. We took a photo together, and as I stepped away, I thought, “I should ask for an interview with her!”

            No, dah!

I turned around, walked back to her booth, and asked a person sitting there if I might be able to get a radio interview with Abby. She gave me her card and suggested I call after the Summit to arrange a phone interview.

It took several weeks to find the right time to do that interview.  Abby’s schedule is always packed because she’s reaching out to everyone who wants to provide life options to women who feel their only option to an unplanned pregnancy is abortion.  She’s an encourager. She’s a person who builds a team instantly because she is so vulnerable when she talks about what takes place inside an abortion facility. And her story starts with an apology for all the abortions that took place under her administrative authority at the abortion clinic she headed up.

There are two things I want to share about Abby Johnson.

First, she’s the real deal. Her desire to protect life includes her willingness to adopt children who are in need of a family. So, between having her babies and adopting other’s babies, she and her heroic husband right now have a family of 10 children.  Here’s to her amazing husband, Doug, who holds the fort down when Abby is speaking or traveling.

The second thing about Abby—she is an educator. I have been in audiences of large crowds of women and men who serve in pregnancy help centers when Abby is speaking.  She shares the real story of what happens behind those closed doors at abortion sites. And she also shares important steps those serving in pregnancy help centers need to take in training staff and volunteers to talk to women who feel abortion is their only option.  Abby educates when she speaks to large audiences—she opens her heart and pours out the love and grace she has received through her walk with God.

I’m grateful for Abby’s testimony. I highly recommend her as a speaker for your organization or your church. And I’ll add this tidbit—she’s a lot of fun! Her story is told  at

Happy Mother’s Day!

What a time to celebrate life.  Young moms actually carrying life in the womb feel bumps and turns as the baby moves and grows.  Moms chasing toddlers are wishing for more stamina at night when it’s time to pick up the toys and fold the laundry.  Moms who have no children look for opportunities to babysit and help others, and often they are found in the nurseries of churches holding crying babies with compassionate hearts and aching arms. Motherhood is a gift.  This very first blog is the beginning of my opportunity to share thoughts and scripture and local news with my good friends, our listeners at Choose Life Radio.  Welcome aboard, dear friends. I want to share one thing today.  Something we must be aware of. Something John Stonestreet, our guest on the radio, shared with us May 8th on Breakpoint.  It is about surrogate mothers providing babies for gay couples, in this case, Anderson Cooper and his homos...
